The Tuscan Countryside

We went to Tuscany as part of our 5 year anniversary trip in October 2019 (pre-COVID19 era of course). We went to Tuscany a few years ago, but only did a day trip from Florence. We decided then though that this was worth coming back to. ‘Tuscany’ is huge and encompasses so many cities and towns so we ended up going to visit as much as we can. We stayed in the Val d’Orcia and hired a private driver, but here’s what we did:

Day 1

This was one of my favorite towns and I definitely wish we could have stayed here!
1. Wine tasting at Il Cacio Brillo
2. Walking the streets especially Via Iannelli
3. Villa Laura (The house used in ‘Under the Tuscan Sun’).

1. St. Francis was on our list, but we didn’t have time to go.
2. Sant Maria degli Angeli was gorgeous to see and this whole town was shades of whites!

Sheep cheese tasting- literally the best cheese I’ve ever tasted in my life!

Day 2
Fonteverde in San Casciano dei bagni

1. SPA DAY- this resort is ridiculously gorgeous with the most amazing thermal baths- definitely worth a visit!
2. Franco Biodi Santi Winery wine tasting
3. Dinner in Bagno Vignoni- this was walking distance from our hotel in Castiglione D’orcia, it’s a very cute little town with a square in the middle

Day 3

Just walked around and enjoyed the views.

Wine Tasting at Avignonesi winery

It’s huge and they produce tons of wines with private tours you can schedule.

Wine Tasting at Castello di Verrazzano

This is the only place we had a scheduled tour of the vineyard and cellars and a formal wine tasting pairing. The thing I loved the most was actual the olive oil they produce!

I was surprised the most at Tuscany how you can’t just go ‘wine tasting’ and hop/walk around- they’re far that you need a car and all of them require a reservation- you can’t just show up so it can be difficult to plan and go to many in a day. I was also surprised that their portions for wine tastings are very small compared to the U.S.- it’s literally just that- a taste. I enjoyed the country life at our hotel being so secluded, but I have to say that I probably wouldn’t go again to stay for a few days- I think Id do a day trip again if I had to suggest something!

The little boutique hotel we stayed at in Tuscany!
