PRADA MARFA

I first learned about the infamous ‘Prada Marfa’ sign from the show Gossip Girl where it was displayed in Lily’s penthouse. I loved it and vowed to myself to buy it one day when I had a house (I got lucky in that my husband feels the same)! I wanted to learn more about the artwork before purchasing it and to my surprise, it had a very interesting history.

Prada Marfa is actually a building in between the cities of Valentine, Texas and Marfa, Texas which was designed to emulate a Prada store. It was created in 2005 by artists Elmgreen and Dragset. The building was vandalized twice a few days after the opening and again in 2014 by writing the word ‘dumb’ and other destruction’s including theft. It is now used as a museum featuring many Prada handbags and shoes to just “be” in the window.

I absolutely love that this was done. It is now a pop culture landmark where people visit to take pictures including Beyoncé and other famous people (Vogue’s Trip to Visit Prada Marfa).
